ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Morris firefighter Aron Jaime (34 and veteran of 10 years) died in an off-duty crash Sunday, with visitation set for Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home on Plainfield Road in Joliet.  ABC7 Chicago

CULTURE NEWS

  • Classic Blast will perform 'Dark Side of the Yule' at the Joliet Area Historical Museum on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. This holiday concert blends Christmas tunes with classic rock and pop covers (tickets cost $20 or $17 for museum members) and offers free parking along with museum gallery access.  Herald-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from three local high schools finished their FEMA Community Emergency Response Team training on Dec. 11. They learned first aid, weather spotting and emergency protocols to support local response efforts, and more classes will be offered next semester.  Herald-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Illinois residents using Get Covered Illinois have until Dec. 31 to pick a plan for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2026 — a change meant to help them adjust before federal subsidies end and costs rise.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Seneca defeated St. Bede 47-39 on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at St. Bede Academy, leaving the team to reflect on their performance after the game.  Herald-News
  • Joliet West girls basketball lost a 59-46 nonconference game to Chicago Butler Prep on Tuesday night. Coach Breanna Blackmon said the team showed strong first-quarter effort and added that the performance helped young guards learn to adjust to game speed.  Herald-News
  • Bureau County area boys and girls basketball tournaments are set in LaMoille, Ottawa, Princeville, Prophetstown, Seneca and St. Bede from Dec. 19 through Dec. 31 (featuring pool play, shootout formats and bracket matchups at local gyms).  Herald-News
  • Friday Night Drive Podcast reviewed the IHSA's planned expansion of high school football playoffs — explaining the new format and its possible impact on local teams, as the hosts weigh in on changes for upcoming games.  Herald-News
  • Lincoln-Way Central won 50-45 in overtime at Frankfort on Tuesday after Alex Panos scored 18 points to help secure the win over Lincoln-Way East, while other local teams also earned wins in boys and girls basketball.  Herald-News
