  • Will County shelters are featuring Pets of the Week with adoptable animals including Smokey the coonhound, Keifer the tabby, Mellie the terrier mix, Nelson who needs a calm home, and the playful cats Oolong and Spooky; families interested in adoption should contact the local agencies for details.  Herald-News
  • Joliet Township High School District 204 and the African American Business Association will host the 18th annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19. Volunteers will register at 7:30 a.m. + enjoy breakfast, live music, service projects and family activities at Joliet Central as they honor Dr. King’s legacy.  Herald-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Morris firefighter and EMT Aron Jaime died after a vehicle crash on Interstate 80 eastbound near mile marker 125 on Saturday, and visitation will be held on Thursday at Tezak Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. as Illinois State Police investigate the incident.  Herald-News

  • The Aurora-based JH Hospitality Group recently opened The Feathered Fork at 20631 Renwick Road in Crest Hill, where diners can enjoy global-inspired chicken and seafood along with a full bar. The restaurant is taking reservations for its Gatsby Chicago event on New Year’s Eve.  Herald-News

  • Hollywood Casino Joliet is hosting its first New Year’s Eve party with live music from Libido Funk Circus from 7–10 p.m. followed by DJ Doc Matrix at 10 p.m. and Soul 2 The Bone at 11 p.m.—the celebration will mark Joliet ringing in 2026.  Herald-News

  • Motorists in Will County must plan for overnight ramp and lane closures on I-80 through Friday as IDOT works to install new signage and shift lanes, which may cause significant delays.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sterling High School graduate Grace Egan had nine kills in Wisconsin's win over Texas Sunday that moved the team into the NCAA Final Four. The Badgers will face Kentucky on Thursday, Dec. 18 in Kansas City.  Herald-News
