COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Herald-News highlights adoptable pets in Will County this week including Ronnie the terrier who loves kids, Harmony Bear the tabby who raised six kittens, Blue the pug mix who needs time to warm up, Dopey the playful kitten, and Blossom and Spooky, two charming cats (local humane groups are ready to help families start the adoption process).  Herald-News
  • Joliet Catholic Academy will hold a community meeting Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the chapel to present plans for an on-campus stadium and athletic facility improvements—details include using land from a former retirement home and steps toward planned unit development approval with an earliest submission of Oct. 14. Neighbors have raised concerns over water, parking, and traffic as they await more information.  Herald-News
  • Joliet Township High School is hosting a free Community Connections Expo at Joliet Central High School on Oct. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. to help residents connect with job opportunities and school and community services — the event will feature a band performance, job fair, resource expo, food vendors, and breakout sessions that give JTHS students two hours of community service credit.  Herald-News

  • Jitters coffeehouse in Joliet will mark its 21st anniversary on Sept. 26 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 178 N. Chicago St.—the event will feature outdoor grilling and special offers to thank loyal local customers.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Abraham Lincoln supported the Illinois and Michigan Canal from his early political days when he voted for it in 1835 and later urged Congress to fund its improvements for trade and military needs. In 1852 he held hearings in Ottawa, Chicago and Joliet—canal boats were later named in his honor to recognize his role in boosting regional infrastructure.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Seneca junior Tori Skelton had 19 service points — including five aces — to help her team beat Reed-Custer 25-12, 25-14 on Monday at Volley for the Cure Night. Teammates supported her strong play as the crowd cheered on.  Herald-News
  • Minooka's girls volleyball team won the Silver Bracket at the Wheaton Classic after beating Metea Valley, Sandburg and Lincoln-Way East, with Kendall Kozak named All-Tournament for her strong play. Local boys soccer, cross country, girls swimming and flag football teams also played tight games in various tournaments.  Herald-News
  • High school football saw many teams lose their unbeaten streaks in Week 4 when close games ended with upsets—Montini and Joliet Catholic won by small margins in contests decided by a touchdown or less. The results from 38 close games and 135 high-scoring wins show that playoff brackets will be tougher later this fall.  Herald-News
  • The Troy Junior High baseball team, which went 26-0 to win the state title in 1975, met at Corrigan’s in Shorewood today to celebrate their 50th anniversary—honoring the undefeated season that still holds the record for most wins by an undefeated team.  Herald-News
  • Joliet Catholic earned its first win on Friday against Marist with a late touchdown pass on the final play—coach Jake Jaworski praised key defensive plays including an interception by Dylan Travis that set up the winning drive, and the team now prepares to host Nazareth. Lincoln-Way East quarterback Jonas Williams, who threw for 354 yards and five touchdowns against Lockport, nears the IHSA passing record as he becomes only the fourth player to top 10,000 career passing yards.  Herald-News
  • Monday night, Joliet Central lost to Lisle 25-22, 25-18 in a girls volleyball match as Lisle built an early lead that proved too much to overcome. Lisle will play in Streator and Joliet Central will visit Minooka today as both teams aim to improve their season records.  Herald-News
  • Minooka Community High School and Plainfield Central High School will play girls' volleyball games for the Hits for Hugs fundraiser on Thursday, Oct 9 with the junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 5:30 p.m.—the varsity match will include a ceremony to honor a local resident whose funds raised will help pay for meals and treatment for her stage three, triple-negative breast cancer—her care is planned to last a year with several months of chemotherapy.  Herald-News
