COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, local audiences can enjoy the Under the Stars Poetry Open Mic at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park at 7 p.m., a $5 screening of The Greatest Showman at Rialto Square Theatre, and Music on the Patio at Lockport Township Park District from 6—8 p.m. The excitement continues with Joliet Pride Fest featuring live music, dancing and food vendors at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park on Saturday, Sept 20.  Herald-News

  • CFX Conquer Boxing Crest Hill is hosting a free ribbon cutting and open house today from noon to 6 p.m. at 1701 N Larkin Ave in Crest Hill where visitors can join raffles, giveaways, local business tables and live boxing demos while touring the new fitness space and enjoying free group training classes.  Herald-News

  • Lockport’s Dellwood Park will transform into a haunted venue this October—hosting Hayride of Horror and Curse of the Bayou on Fridays, Saturdays, and select Sundays—with the hayride running from 7–10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and the maze open from 6–9 p.m. on the last two Sundays.  Herald-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Joliet Public Schools District 86 approved a new three-year contract with the teachers union on Sept. 10 that gives a 12% wage boost for 768 teachers with retroactive pay from August—Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse said the deal will help keep quality staff.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joliet Township Supervisor Cesar Guerrero spoke at a city council meeting Tuesday after ICE agents stopped a vehicle on West Jefferson Street a day earlier—he urged city officials to recognize the incident and protect residents’ rights. He said the township will support policies that let residents live without fear.  Herald-News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Northern Illinois farms are welcoming families for fall fun with pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes and petting zoos on their property. Many venues — such as those in Aurora, Woodstock and Homer Glen — will hold these festive events through October.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jillian Pinter tallied five kills to lead the St. Bede volleyball team to a win at Spring Valley — they defeated Hall 25-10, 25-20.  Herald-News
  • In CCL/ESCC Week 3 football, Montini and IC Catholic Prep won their games to stay 3—0 while Loyola beat St. Francis and Brother Rice earned a ranked win over St. Rita; teams in the White, Red and Purple divisions also won important games.  Herald-News
  • The Associated Press released Wednesday the Week 4 IHSA football polls for all eight classes—showing the team rankings for local high schools.  Herald-News
  • Friday Night Drive Podcast Episode 302 will preview Illinois high school football Week 4 by discussing which teams can remain undefeated, with hosts Josh Welge & Steve Soucie guiding listeners through the review. This episode offers local fans clear insight into team prospects ahead of the upcoming games.  Herald-News
  • Joliet Catholic alum Patrick Durkin overcame surgery and a broken hip to become Tulane's starting kicker, making all his kicks to help the team start the season perfectly. He will face 13th ranked Ole Miss on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN (a win could lift Tulane into the top 25).  Herald-News
  • Lincoln-Way Central's Brady Wall shot a five-under 65 to win the HF golf tournament—he led the Homewood-Flossmoor Mini Tournament with his score. Local schools also won in boys soccer and girls volleyball as teams posted important scores across several contests.  Herald-News
  • Plainfield Central's first-year flag football team won a 60—6 game against Minooka on Wednesday, moving its record to 5—5 while Minooka dropped to 1—6. Coach Jenna Malak said the team is building confidence in their debut season as they quickly learn the game.  Herald-News
  • Joliet West's girls volleyball team overcame a lost first set to beat Lockport 14-25, 25-22, 25-16 Wednesday evening. The Tigers, ranked fourth in Class 4A, will host a sectional as they built strong momentum with aggressive serving — a win that boosts their playoff hopes.  Herald-News
