Good morning, Joliet. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Benjamin Bennington recalled being in the basement when an F5 tornado struck his Plainfield home on August 28 — his father rescued him, his sister, and neighbors amid roaring winds, shattered glass, and severe damage that left lasting trauma on the community.  Herald-News
  • Retired Joliet firefighter Tim Carlin recalled how volunteers helped first responders during the Aug. 28, 1990 tornado that struck Plainfield, Oswego, Crest Hill and Joliet — a day that haunted him when he tried to save 3-year-old Sara Brower. He now joins the Joliet Certified Emergency Response Team, which trains volunteers in trauma care and search-and-rescue to improve disaster response in our community.  Herald-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Raymond D. Martinez, 33, fled Joliet police in a stolen Mazda on August 29 near Black Road and Route 59 before crashing near Theodore Street—causing a brief lockdown at three schools and minor injuries to two others before he was arrested in the 1700 block of Hidden Oaks Court.  FOX 32
  • Joliet police issued a shelter-in-place order at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of Ann Street after a neighbor dispute led a suspect to fire one round into the air — officers then arrested the suspect, questioned him, and lifted the order at 2:55 p.m. with no injuries reported.  FOX 32

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Joliet City Council will vote Tuesday on awarding a $197,000 commission for Sijia Chen’s Dome of Unity — a white stainless steel sculpture with a paper cut style — to be installed in the new city square near the Rialto Square Theatre.
