  • The 122nd Will County Fair took place from Aug. 20 to 24 in Peotone—drawing hundreds with carnival rides, live bands, fair food, tractor pulls, demolition derbies, and a world championship rodeo. Three-year-old Quin Ketelaar, seen in a John Deere hat, was held by his aunt Emma Smits—witnessing the popular tractor pull.  Herald-News

  • Will County Forest Preserve District announced a week-long series of free nature programs starting Aug 31 that include the Hummingbird Hangout at Plum Creek Nature Center and separate homeschool field trips in Channahon—additional events offer sensory hikes, kayaking lessons and evening paddles for all ages with some requiring registration.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Motorists heading downtown next week will get two hours free street parking in three zones from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and a mobile license plate reader will monitor parking—violators face a $30 fine while city officials hope the change will boost the new city square and ease congestion.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The high school girls volleyball season in The Times area is set to start soon with five standout players—Taylor Jeffers from Newark, Kelsey Cuchra from Marquette, Brooklyn Sheedy from Seneca, Aubrey Jacobs from Streator and Kendall Biba from Ottawa—expected to boost their teams after strong performances last fall.  Herald-News
  • Providence won 4-0 against Joliet Catholic in its season opener as Jovanny Gonzalez scored two goals and teammates Hofferica and Dominguez added to the score. Coach Mike Taylor said he will fix team mistakes — he plans to set a steady lineup over five games this week.  Herald-News
  • On Monday, Joliet West won its volleyball season opener with a 25-16, 25-16 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor as senior Faith Jordan had six kills and three aces — Lina Govoni added eight kills and 12 assists to help the team start 1-0.  Herald-News
  • The Southland Athletic Conference preview shows that teams like the Bloom Blazing Trojans, Crete-Monee Warriors, and Kankakee Kays are set for a competitive 2025 season beginning Aug. 29. Coaches praise returning key players and new leadership as they aim to build on past success and achieve playoff returns.  Herald-News
