Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of July.
Good morning, Joliet.
Renovations on the Black Road branch of the Joliet Public Library began June 30 as part of a $4.8 million project to update the space with new zones for adults, youth and children and improvements like a play area and better study rooms.
The branch stays open with limited services while phase one is set to finish this winter and phase two by late spring—funded by a city loan, state grant, special service funds and donations.
Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on the southbound lanes of I-55 near Joliet Road in Bolingbrook on July 9th; state police said the accident at 5:15 a.m. led to a two-hour closure before the lanes reopened at 7:15 a.m. and both individuals were taken to a local hospital.
A Joliet man (Terhan Foster Gordon, 35) has been missing since June 27 and police located a silver Pontiac G6 sedan with a Mississippi license plate near the 600 block of Woodruff Road during searches using police dogs and drones, but they did not find additional evidence and ask anyone with information to call 911.
Illinois residents will get surprise checks from the state this summer as the State Treasurer’s Office sends out $45 million in unclaimed funds to nearly 600,000 people – most checks are for $50 or less.
Diane Matter said she was offered $100,000 to annex her property so that a planned Love’s truck stop on Briggs Street can get city water and sewer services, and she and her husband have regularly spoken at City Council meetings to oppose the project set for 2026.
The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the annexation agreement—leaving Matter’s fight to continue as the construction moves forward.
