ECONOMY NEWS

  • Illinois residents will face new taxes on everyday items starting on July 1, which will include higher gas and vaping taxes along with additional charges on sports betting, short-term rentals and telecommunications services. The gas tax will rise from 47 to 48 cents per gallon and the tobacco tax will jump from 36 percent to 45 percent — moves designed to help balance the state’s budget.  FOX 32

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Joliet promoted Jayne Bernhard to planning director after she took on many duties following the previous director's retirement last November—she will now lead key planning projects and historic preservation work in the city.  Herald-News
  • Joliet City Council approved a plan to offer free two-hour street parking downtown that starts Sept. 1—motorists must follow a zone system to avoid a $30 ticket if they park in the same area twice. The plan does not change rates for parking decks or commuter lots—these locations will remain paid parking.  Herald-News
  • The Joliet City Council will meet Friday at 9 a.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall to vote on a legal settlement involving disputes over the NorthPoint Development project—this settlement includes the city, CenterPoint Properties, NorthPoint Development and the Houbolt Road Extension JV regarding the toll bridge agreement.  Herald-News
