- ➤ Joliet plans two summer concert series starting next week. Sounds on 66 in City Square will run Fridays from June 5 through Aug. 28 while Concerts on the Hill takes place on Thursdays from June 4 through Aug. 27, both offering free live music in downtown venues. Herald-News
- ➤ Country rock singer Laura Bryna will thrill Joliet on Thursday, June 4 with a pregame performance outside the Slammers Stadium at 5:30 p.m. + a free live concert at the new City Square from 9 to 10:15 p.m. Herald-News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Joliet Junior College has expanded its early childhood education apprenticeship program by partnering with Catholic Charities’ Head Start to offer placements at local childcare centers. The program, which helped graduate Aubrey Floyd, now plans to serve 55 apprentices with additional grant funding (supporting workforce development). Herald-News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Illinois lawmakers passed a bill early Monday giving rideshare drivers the right to unionize; the law sets a 10%+30% signature threshold and imposes a 4-cent per ride fee to fund a support program, and now it heads to the governor for approval. Herald-News
- ➤ Joliet will begin water main construction along Glenwood Avenue between Larkin Avenue and Springfield Avenue on Monday - the work will reduce traffic to one lane each way and complete by Aug. 15, so drivers should seek alternate routes. Herald-News
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Aiden Connors of Plainfield North captured the Class 3A 3,200-meter run at the IHSA state track meet on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O'Brien Field, while Dwight's Graham Meister three-peated in the Class 1A shot put — setting a new class record.
