Good morning, Joliet.

Veterans from World War II and the Vietnam War including Tony Arellano and Joe Belman spoke at the Joliet Jewish Congregation on May 24—honoring Jewish service members and urging people to reflect on Memorial Day’s true meaning amid recent hate incidents and misrepresented military cemetery markers. Arellano, a senior leader at Cantigny VFW Post 367, and Belman, a 100-year-old veteran who flew combat missions, shared personal experiences and noted legislative efforts to properly recognize Jewish military contributions.

Police arrested a Joliet man and woman on May 25 when officers found a loaded gun and drugs in a car with a 4-year-old girl near Chicory Court— the child was safely released to a family member and the man faces charges including armed violence and drug offenses while the woman received a notice to appear for endangering a child.
