GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joliet holds its first Memorial Day ceremony in the new City Square today from noon to 1 p.m. with the American Legion Band performing at 11:30 a.m.—keynote speaker Benjamin M. White will honor fallen service members with representatives from all branches present.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Koen Lynes hit two home runs to propel Joliet Catholic to an 8-4 win over Wilmington on Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game, and the Hilltoppers (16-14) boosted their momentum with strong offense and relief pitching. The team now prepares for its regional postseason opener next week.  Herald-News
  • Haley Muehlnickel had three hits + four RBIs that helped Lincoln-Way East win 19-0 in Tuesday's Class 4A regional semifinal against TF South. Coach Liz Hyland said the win gives the team flexibility ahead of Friday's title game with Andrew.  Herald-News
  • Seneca softball team won Tuesday's regional semifinal 11-0 over Reed-Custer on its home field and will play Friday for a chance at their third regional title; pitchers Tessa Krull and Hayden Pfeifer combined for a one-hit shutout.  Herald-News
  • Bishop McNamara’s softball team rallied after seven scoreless innings by hitting four home runs in the top of the ninth to win a wild extra-inning 9-4 semifinal against Wilmington on Tuesday, May 19—keeping their season in play.  Herald-News
  • Plainfield East beat Kaneland 2-1 in overtime when player Kessiah Purnell scored in the 91st minute, and Geneva pushed past Joliet Catholic 7-0 with five different scorers; Plainfield East will face top-seeded Geneva in the regional finals.  Herald-News
  • Fulton’s team beat Newman yesterday after freshman Kerby Germann hit a walk off single for a 4-3 win; pitcher Jessa Read threw a complete game. The Steamers will face top seeded Morrison in Friday’s regional final at 4:30 p.m.  Herald-News
