- ➤ The new Village of Shorewood YMCA opened last Monday and hosted an open house on Saturday, May 2, drawing 2,500 visitors and enrolling over 6,000 members in a facility (60,000 sqft) at 1801 W. Jefferson St. Herald-News
- ➤ AVID students from Joliet Central and West host a $3 or less Sip & Thrift Sale at Joliet West High School on May 8 and 9. The sale in the afternoon on Friday and morning on Saturday benefits local nonprofits including a scholarship, animal rescue and children’s advocacy center. Herald-News

- ➤ Chicago Lithuanian Opera celebrates its 70th anniversary with a production of von Flotow's Martha at Rialto Square Theatre on May 10 downtown. The performance features soloists from Lithuania and the U.S. and will be held in Lithuanian with tickets starting at $84. Herald-News

- ➤ At Gompers Junior High, student journalists and teacher Chad Nelson uncovered a 1969 time capsule hidden behind a plaque on Friday, May 1, which held letters + school supplies and memorabilia. The district will display the items in the new library and later create a 2026 capsule before demolition. Herald-News

- ➤ Dick’s House of Sport will begin construction this summer at the Rock Run Collection near I-55 and I-80 and is set to open by back-to-school 2027 after City Council approved a $37 million incentive deal to attract 50 stores and restaurants (including a recreation center with a playing field, climbing wall, golf cage, and skating rink). - ➤ Romeoville baseball beat Joliet Central by a score of 13 to 3 in six innings Tuesday after a weather postponement from Monday. Players like Ashton Martinez, Jack Mulheron and Alfredo Casas sparked the win while Central committed six errors. Herald-News
