CRIME NEWS

  • Channahon officials evacuated the police department and municipal center after a suspicious package was delivered—residents and drivers are advised to avoid the area as investigators review the situation.  WGN-TV
  • Supporters and the family of David Malito held a vigil at the Shell gas station on May 5 to demand an independent investigation and the firing of the officer involved after he died following a 911 call on Dec. 25—Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans defended the officers by citing a review panel and forensic report that found Malito died from cocaine intoxication—critics remain vocal about the department’s accountability.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Juan Moreno took his seat on the Joliet City Council on May 5th—replacing Cesar Guerrero, who left to serve as Joliet Township supervisor—after winning the April 1 election. Incumbents Jan Quillman and Joe Clement were sworn in for another four years with strong union support, and Moreno said he plans to listen to Joliet residents to guide his work.  Herald-News
