COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local plant lovers from Troy Township, Shorewood, and Joliet will swap houseplants, seeds, and cuttings at the annual event on Sunday, May 17 at Troy Township Offices (25448 W. Seil Road, Shorewood) from noon to 2 p.m.; a backup date is set for Sunday, May 31.  Herald-News
  • Joliet Public Library Black Road Branch completed a one-year, $4.8 million renovation that added a Book Burrow for kids, a teen room and extra meeting space with a view of Rock Run Preserve. The library held an open house on Friday, April 24 — showcasing changes for the community.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, local softball games saw strong pitching as Preston Payne tossed a one-hitter for Bishop McNamara and Peotone ended Grant Park’s perfect run, while track meets at the Gary Haupert Invitational and Lockport Marszalek Invite featured close finishes.  Herald-News
  • Local high school sports saw teams compete on Saturday with Joliet Catholic baseball dominating Carmel in a doubleheader (Evan Wills struck out seven in one game) while softball, track, soccer, volleyball, and tennis contests delivered competitive wins across the region.  Herald-News
  • Beecher’s softball team won two games Saturday to move to 17-0 while Gardner-South Wilmington’s baseball and softball teams split doubleheaders with Serena, as reported in Saturday’s sports roundup. Other local teams also faced key matchups during the day.  Herald-News
