Good morning, Joliet. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • A 17-year-old from Joliet was arrested in Grundy County after a high-speed chase on I-80 ended near Arby's on U.S. Route 6 in Morris — he had allegedly stolen a firearm in Peru, was found with a loaded .38 handgun in his vehicle, and was believed to plan to shoot a man over an incident from Monday.  Herald-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local coffee shop owners in Joliet, New Lenox, and Lockport said tariffs announced today represent only one factor driving rising coffee costs caused by supply chain issues, climate change, and increased demand. Gina Duffy of Jitters, Daniel Bednarz of Gost Coffee, and Nour Zein of Blissful Brew Coffee Co. — who reported delays in harvests and rising production expenses — warned that these challenges could lead to higher prices and shifts in how customers spend their money.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Joliet has been billed $157,280 for legal fees to fight a conspiracy lawsuit filed by former Mayor Bob O’Dekirk after he lost the 2023 election. More costs will likely be incurred as O’Dekirk moves his case to Will County court and city attorneys seek to recover expenses—raising concerns about ongoing litigation.  Herald-News
  • Residents from the Picardy subdivision urged City Council on Monday to delay Tuesday's vote on the final plat for the Prairie Landing subdivision planned on land partly owned by Mayor Terry D’Arcy (with some neighbors concerned about water runoff), but council members did not signal a change in schedule. Councilman Larry Hug said he is comfortable with DR Horton’s plan for 120 new single-family homes behind D’Arcy Motors, and the vote remains set as planned.  Herald-News
  • The Illinois Department of Transportation said southbound I-55 at I-80 closed Tuesday night to remove steel beams as part of rebuilding the I-80 bridges over I-55 in Joliet, Channahon, and Shorewood. Northbound I-55 will have reduced lanes starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday and a full closure from 1 to 5 a.m. Thursday—drivers must follow a detour until the lanes reopen.  Herald-News
