CRIME NEWS

  • A Crest Hill man, David Malito (39), died from cocaine intoxication after Joliet officers handcuffed him during a 911 call at a gas station on Dec. 25, and a coroner later ruled his death an accident with no charges filed.  Herald-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joliet is celebrating the historic Route 66, an original U.S. numbered highway that begins in Chicago and will mark its 100th anniversary next year—highlighting its role in American travel.  FOX 32
  • Route 66 enthusiasts in Joliet gathered on Thursday along what locals call the Mother Road—Route 66's nickname—to begin centennial plans for the historic highway in 2026, and signs at the Joliet Area Historical Museum—key to the celebrations—show that local officials and tourism leaders are meeting to prepare for an influx of both domestic and international visitors. This event marks the first step in a planned series of activities celebrating the 100th anniversary of the iconic route.  FOX 32

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Joliet Catholic Academy plans to build a new on-campus football stadium and athletic facilities on the former Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home site— the school will seek a city permit next week and present its proposal to the Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday— and the project includes a multi-purpose field, additional parking, tennis courts, pickleball courts, and a new track with a turf field to support its football program. Football games that were held at Memorial Stadium will be moved to the new facility once construction begins.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois House passed House Bill 1237 on Tuesday — it stops K-12 schools from using Native American names, logos or mascots and lets them keep using old materials until a new one is chosen. The bill now goes to the Illinois State Senate — it must pass there and be signed by Governor Pritzker before it becomes law.  WGN-TV
  • Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is reviewing a request to testify at a Congressional hearing on May 15 about state immigration policies—House Oversight Chair James Comer invited him along with two other governors. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and state lawmakers have given differing responses on the issue following testimony last month.  FOX 32

  • Santa’s Village will open its 66th season on May 17 with three new rides—Lil’ Monster Rally, Reindeer Rocker and Coconut Competition—that add to unlimited access to rides, water slides and a petting zoo.
