- ➤ Joliet will designate a section of Wallace Street as Larry Ellis Way to honor the late Rev. Larry Ellis, a longtime community leader & minister at St. Mark C.M.E. Church. The move follows an application by nonprofit activist Trista Brown and was approved during a recent City Council meeting. Herald-News

- ➤ Walt's Ice Cream in Joliet had a record opening on Sunday, March 1, serving nearly 500 orders in cool, sunny weather (at 1314 W. Jefferson St.). Nearby, Frosty Tips reopened and Minooka Creamery is set to open Friday. Herald-News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Joliet Township High School District 204 recognized 94 Class of 2026 seniors as Illinois State Scholars at its February board meeting; the honor was given to students who ranked in the upper half or scored above the 95th percentile on college tests (a top academic achievement). Herald-News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Wilmington will start controlled burns this spring to cut overgrown vegetation and lower wildfire risk; details will be posted 24 to 48 hours in advance until April 15, and some areas may close for safety — county emergency officials will be notified when burns begin. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Providence Catholic girls lost to Washington 73 to 47 in the Class 3A Kankakee Supersectional on Monday. It was their first defeat to a Class 3A team (they were 31 to 5 this season) and ended a strong winning run. Herald-News
- ➤ St. Francis boys basketball advanced to the sectional championship after beating Lemont 52-44 Tuesday, even with injuries and a tough season so far. The team entered the playoffs with a below .500 record and will face the winner of Wednesday’s game between Wheaton Academy and Providence. Herald-News
- ➤ Marquette Academy announced Tuesday that former Princeton High School assistant Drake Davis has been named head coach of the Crusaders football team in place of Ken Carlson—bringing fresh leadership to the storied program that made 13 straight playoff appearances. Herald-News
- ➤ Bishop McNamara beat Wilmington 61-24 in the IHSA Class 2A Seneca Sectional semifinal on Tuesday, March 3. Coen Demack celebrated a scoring play with teammates as the Fightin' Irish won the game. Herald-News
