CULTURE NEWS

  • Masters of Illusion will perform on Feb. 28 at Rialto Square Theatre downtown, offering a live show of modern magic and comedic illusions by award-winning performers. Tickets start at $39 at the Rialto Box Office or online at Ticketmaster.com.  Herald-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • District 86 will send 33 junior high students to the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Region 9 Science Fair on March 26 at North Central College in Naperville after they earned gold medals at the STEM Extravaganza. Two Dirksen students scored perfectly and will compete for a state slot in April.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislation to rename the Plainfield Post Office in honor of fallen Staff Sgt. Jose Duenez Jr., a Joliet native, is headed to the full House after unanimously passing committee review. Rep. Underwood sponsors the bill to recognize his military service and community contributions.  Herald-News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • On Sunday, Feb. 22, local surveys rank top margarita spots as restaurants across nearby counties, including favorites in St. Charles, Geneva, McHenry, and Joliet, plan to serve both classic and creative drinks for National Margarita Day.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bishop McNamara clinched its second straight regional title with a 52-45 win (avenging a Feb. 11 loss) over Joliet Catholic on Thursday, Feb. 19.  Herald-News
  • The Kankakee basketball team outlasted Joliet West + won 65-52 on Wednesday, Feb. 18 in a regular season capper. Key players Hazelett + Williams led the winning effort as both teams wrapped up the season.  Herald-News
  • Rock Island Alleman beat St. Bede 42-40 in the Class 2A Regional final basketball game on Thursday, Feb. 19 at St. Bede Academy — a close contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.  Herald-News
  • Providence Catholic won the regional championship with a 46 to 18 victory over Oak Forest on Thursday night at home, showing a dominant defense and key offensive bursts. The Celtics will travel to Hillcrest Tuesday for a 6 p.m. sectional semifinal against TF North.  Herald-News
  • St. Bede senior Ruby Michaels will play flag football at Benedictine University next spring in Lisle. Michaels, who shined in high school football (playing tackle and flag football), will join the team as center to continue her competitive career.  Herald-News
  • Herald-News area playoff basketball begins Monday with Bolingbrook favored in Class 4A and Joliet Catholic seeded first in Class 3A. Local teams including Joliet West and Lincoln-Way will contest sectional and play-in games (key matchups and seeding details add excitement for fans).  Herald-News
