CULTURE NEWS

  • Joliet Symphony Orchestra will perform ‘Made in America’ featuring works by Copland, Coleridge-Taylor, and Hanson at Sexton Auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. while free pre-concert discussions start 45 minutes before each show.  Herald-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The District 86 board voted Wednesday to close A.O. Marshall Elementary after this school year — students will move to Isaac Singleton Elementary for the 2026-27 school year amid low enrollment and building concerns.  Herald-News
  • Two teachers from Will County received Illinois Teacher of the Year honors in the ISBE awards. Ghazala Manzoor of Brooks Middle School and Laura Eichberger of Troy Hofer Elementary were recognized for their impact on students across Bolingbrook + Shorewood.  Herald-News
  • Students are urged to apply for the Will County Summer Internship Program, which offers about 150 paid positions and involves 15 high schools (including Joliet Township High School District 204). More than 1,000 students have applied, and interested candidates should check the program page before the deadline.  Herald-News

  • Officials said Tuesday that warmer weather began melting thick ice on the Illinois and Kankakee Rivers near Morris, and local emergency management urged residents to update their emergency plans via the Ready Will County app+ as conditions change slowly.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge upheld Illinois’ pioneering law that prohibits banks from charging swipe fees on tips+ taxes, giving local retailers until July 1 to set up new compliance systems. Financial groups plan to appeal the decision, leaving businesses to adjust to the upcoming changes.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Joliet Catholic defeated Bishop McNamara 55 to 33 on Wednesday with Abby Dulinsky leading a defense that forced early turnovers — a factor in the win that gave the Angels a 13 to 15 finish. They will face the quarterfinal winner next week in a Class 2A Regional championship preview.  Herald-News
  • Local girls basketball teams kick off the IHSA postseason on Saturday with matchups set across multiple regionals. Bolingbrook, Lockport & Joliet Central are among the teams aiming for regional titles as coaches emphasize strong defense, teamwork and momentum ahead of challenging sectional contests.  Herald-News
