COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Joliet Bishop Ronald Hicks hosted a news conference at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Thursday and will officially assume his role as Archbishop later today with an installation mass. He has served as a priest for over-30 years, and his appointment follows Cardinal Timothy Dolan's retirement.  ABC7 Chicago

CULTURE NEWS

  • Book-themed venues are reviving the reading scene in Will and Grundy counties as new spaces in Mokena, Morris, Plainfield and Lockport opened to host author signings and community events, and owners say these spots meet locals' need for quiet places to gather over books.  Herald-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Feb. 4, parents, teachers and students filled the gym at AO Marshall Elementary (a 101-year-old school) to urge the board to keep it open next school year. The board will vote on the school's future on Mar. 11.  Herald-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Abraham Garcia, owner of BF Tires, told City Council Tuesday he felt locked out of bidding on the city's tire contracts after years of trying to supply needed products, while city officials said Garcia did not meet requirements & noted no exclusive supplier agreement exists.  Herald-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marmion wrestlers & Montini wrestlers secured spots in the dual state meet on Thursday, Feb. 5 in Aurora. Marmion posted a 46-23 win against Mount Carmel while Montini rallied for a 35-27 win over Marist; Montini will face Edwardsville in the state quarterfinal.  Herald-News
  • Sophomore Tessa New was named Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week after strong performances helped Parkview Christian reach a 23-2 record. An online vote recognized her standout play including (21 points, 11 steals in one game) as she continues to lead her team.  Herald-News
  • Joliet Catholic won 63-5 over Yorkville in the Class 3A Marmion Dual Team Sectional, advancing to the state dual team tournament for the fifth straight season. They will face No. 1 Marmion on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.  Herald-News
  • Herald-News area girls wrestlers begin the IHSA postseason in two regionals—most teams will compete at East Aurora while others face off at Normal West this weekend. Local standouts Claudia Heeney and Zoe Dempsey aim to advance to state in Bloomington.  Herald-News
  • Providence boys wrestling advanced to the state meet in Bloomington after a 63-14 win over Evergreen Park in the Class 2A sectional on Thursday — the Herald News Sports Roundup also covered other local contests.  Herald-News
  • Seneca High School’s girls basketball team won the Tri-County Conference game over Marquette 69-39 on Thursday night during senior night. A 19-6 run in the third quarter helped secure their third win in a row, with Emma Mino scoring 19 points + key plays from Tessa Krull.  Herald-News
